 | Exploring northern Minnesota streams, welands and forests along General Grade Road, named after the railroad bed which had been converted to a flat, arrow-straight road through the forest, I came upon a large clump of goldenrod (Canadian goldenrod?) between a small pullout and the West Branch of the Baptism River. It was a cool morning in early October and hundreds of flies were feeding on the nectar. The flies moved slowly and were not too concerned about my presence, including a close-up lens and tripod. With overcast skies and 4-5 foot tall flowers, you couldn't ask for better conditions for close-up field photography.
